The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on October 9, 2026, that Navanethem "Navi" Pillay would receive the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The committee credited her work advancing peace and international law.

Pillay has served on South Africa's High Court, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court. She also served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The committee says she is now a judge at the International Court of Justice in the case accusing Myanmar of genocide. It presents the award as support for international legal institutions facing pressure.
